Meet Tertia, a Johannesburg based doula, antenatal class teacher and co-owner of Mother Instinct.



She completed her doula training in 2008.  She keeps current by attending births at various hospitals, birth clinics and homes, attending workshops and courses and interacting with care providers and researching every moment she gets, as well as listening to her most willing teachers - her clients and their babies.

 

Tertia also assist at antenatal classes at Mother Instinct.



Although her focus is labour and birth support, she also strives to make sure you get the best post-partum care after birth as well.

​What is a Doula?

Doulas are knowledgeable about the physiological processes of birth and are informed about the various technologies presently being used in hospitals. A doula's job is to support expectant parents in prenatal preparations for their birth so parents can make their own best decisions.  She provides continuous support throughout labour, nurturing, protecting and comforting the woman and her partner through their experience.

Studies on the presence of a doula throughout labour have shown

50% decrease in caesarean sections
25% decrease in the length of labour
30% decrease in use of forceps
40% decrease in use of oxytocin (pitocin)
60% decrease in use of epidurals
30% decrease in use of pain medications (narcotics)
